Through their tight-knit relationship with hundreds of Indian suppliers, Dilli Grey is able to import a huge range of original and handmade designs from India so that you can choose from an impressive array of unique and individual designs.
We love Dilli Grey’s approach to fashion because it’s one that cuts out the middlemen and the seasonal planning of the big fashion houses and just offers gorgeous new clothing styles that women want to buy and wear. Without bowing to the latest trends or working on the razor-sharp schedules of the fast fashion brands, Dilli Grey can hone their products to ensure that everyone is as stylish and wearable as possible.
History Of Dilli Grey
Dilli Grey is a new brand, launched in London in 2015, but it had a wealth of experience behind it as the brainchild of senior fashion buyer Vickie El-Rayyes. As an employee of huge brands like Warehouse, East and Monsoon for more than twenty years, Vickie was able to indulge her love of travel in the Far East and India, and combined that with a real desire to work with the people and cultures she met for both their benefits.
The result is a small team of people who work directly with artisans and manufacturers in India who work with their designers to create original and new clothes that draw inspiration from a mixture of western and eastern styles. Sparked by travels through the clothing markets of India with her mother, Vickie’s brand emphasised the welfare of the artisan producers as well as the environmental impact of her clothes, an approach that quickly drew the attention of major fashion and news publications. The result has been a brand that’s grown quickly, but still connects with the designers behind their work.
Dilli Grey Collections
We love that Dilli Grey works so closely with the artisans who produce their clothing in India, because it helps create true fusions of east and west as the designers in London bounce off and share ideas with the craftspeople. Dilli Grey advertise their clothing as season independent, because so much of their range is based on traditional and locally inspired designs that have stood the test of time, mixed with the fashions and shapes of a trendy London street. Their signature clothing ranges are the types of classic ladies dresses favoured by Indian women with culturally specific designs, patterns and markings all created in traditional ways such as block printing.
As well as these ‘east meets west’ designs that feature in Dilli Grey dresses and robes, we also love the unique and exciting designs that are purely inspired by Indian fashion. To us, the definition of wearable fashion is the sort that has been honed and refined by generations of women looking to dress well while they dress comfortably, and that’s exactly what you get with the amazing range of traditionally-inspired Dilli Grey dresses and robes.
Dilli Grey Dresses & Robes
There’s such an eclectic mix of styles in the Dilli Grey dresses and robes collection that it’s hard to choose, but here are our favourites:
Joni Kaftan Midi Dilli Grey Dress in Cosmos Pink
We love this Joni Kaftan Midi Dilli Grey Dress, and we feel like it does so much to capture the spirit of the brand’s ethos, combining as it does that mix of western and eastern styles, combined with the authentic designs of Indian artisans. The western style of women's midi dresses combined with the Nehru collar and the traditional Indian pink of the material goes beautifully with the floral designs that echo the lush Indian landscape all around the people who created the patterns. Some of these materials are also used in the range of alternative Dilli Grey dresses this women's clothing brand provides.
Patterned Robe
The Patterned Robe goes a little in the other direction, offering an Indian twist on a western design rather than the other way around. We love how much effort has gone into making this design comfortable and breathable, using Indian cotton to create a flowing and airy gown that is both insulating and cooling – learned in the heat of the fierce Indian sun. The design is also lovely, another in traditional Indian pink with the royal symbol of the elephant picked out in darker shades, and elements of this design approach can even be seen in some of their Dilli Grey dresses as well!
Wave Print and Bhuta Long PJ Set
Is there any better symbol of cross-cultural sharing than this? Pyjamas first came to the west from India in the 18th century as aristocrats mimicked the loose and fine clothes worn by Indian royalty in their palaces, and this is an example of a western design interpreted in the other direction. These Dilli Grey pyjamas are another superbly wearable set of garments that put the comfort and breathability of the traditional clothing at the top of the agenda, it also blends Indian cultural symbols and traditional plant designs into the mix.
