Fisherman Out Of Ireland is a brand founded on a long tradition of Irish woollen and knitwear production stretching back hundreds of years, creating a blend of ancient and modern designs that capture the spirit of the wild Atlantic coast. There’s no doubting the DNA of the brand when you see the gorgeous, chunky knits and traditional designs of each garment, but thanks to modern tailoring, there’s no need to put up with traditional standards of comfort – they’re all extremely comfortable and wearable too.
Alongside the traditional design, there are plenty of contemporary touches too, just like the Scottish Knitwear we also have at Sarah Thomson. Some of these design details include their modern cuts and finishes that successfully blend the old with the new to create something that is different from both. There’s nowhere better than the coast of Ireland to find warm and practical clothes built to last, and thanks to the team at Fisherman Out Of Ireland, they also look great too.
History Of Fisherman Out Of Ireland
While Fisherman Out Of Ireland is a relatively young brand formed in 1991, its foundation has much deeper roots. The brand was founded by the family owners of the Blarney Woolen Mills, a company with a weaving heritage dating back to the early 19th century, working to turn the products of the famous Donegal sheep herders into wool garments. While the mills closed in the 1970s, the company’s Irish heritage lived on, and with a new name, the mills reopened soon after as the largest Irish craft and goods store in the world.
Showcasing Irish products of all kinds, from traditional crafts and literature to food and drink, it was the destiny of the mills to sell woollen garments once again, and working with their nearby knitting factory in Kilcar, Donegal, the Blarney Woolen Mills set up Fisherman Out Of Ireland to be its official fashion arm. As before, the family company aim to represent hundreds of years of Irish heritage and tradition in the classic knitwear they sell, creating new and exciting fashions inspired by the rugged Atlantic coastline and the traditional clothes of the area. Using 100% natural fibres still produced in Donegal, they have created a mix of the old and the new that is still extremely wearable even today.
Fisherman Out Of Ireland Collections
Fisherman Out Of Ireland was founded on the principle of bringing the world to Ireland and Ireland to the world, something they do extremely well in the sheer range of knitted products available. They have turned traditional Irish knitting techniques and raw materials into garments of every kind from around the world, including shawls and ponchos, as well as culottes and serapes. As a brand with the sea air in its blood, their biggest focus is on warm and comforting outerwear such as sweaters, women's scarves, coats, hats and even some women's tank tops – all of which are made from local and Arran wool. These range from the strictly traditional to a hybrid of both old and new, with some modern cuts and styles inserted into age-old designs, so there really is something for everybody.
However, alongside these collections, the brand also produces some more surprising pieces like Tweed jackets and waistcoats as well as t-shirts and hoodies, slippers, pyjamas and other nightwear. At Sarah Thomson, we always select the lines we stock based on their wearability and the feeling you get when you put them on and wear them throughout the day, and the brand’s commitment to quality and diversity makes them an excellent choice if you share our values.
Fisherman Out Of Ireland Products
Cabled and Ribbed Polo Neck
Fisherman Out Of Ireland is best known for its wool products, and there can hardly be a more classic woollen clothing piece than a chunky knitted sweater, but what we love about this particular garment is how it subverts your expectations. Despite being as classic as they come, this Cabled and Ribbed Polo Neck Jumper surprises with its intricate and eye-catching weave and its attractive polo neck detail, and the fact that it’s made with high-quality merino wool for an excellent feel just adds the cherry on the cake. It’s super soft and easy to wear while conferring all the warmth and that classic woollen look without any discomfort.
Colour Blocked Scarf
The Fisherman Out Of Ireland brand represents traditional and modern Ireland, which is why we love this Colour Blocked Scarf, which is an excellent fusion of the two. Despite being made using traditional techniques from Merino wool, this scarf adds a splash of colour and sophistication to any outfit, which is a far cry from the stereotypically rugged and practical clothing you might expect. It feels great to wear thanks to the soft and high-quality wool used, and it’s versatile enough to be used with just about any outfit to keep warm or as an accessory.
Ribbed Two Button Cardigan
With a focus on comfort and ease of use, this cardigan fits in perfectly with what we try to do at Sarah Thomson, creating a garment that is practical and fashionable without sacrificing any of the great feeling you get when putting it on. Made from merino wool for a comfortable feel against the skin, this Ribbed Two Button Cardigan is relaxed and fun while also keeping you nice and warm.
