History of the T-shirt

The t-shirt these days is so popular that it's hard to believe there was a time when people wore anything else, but while loose casual and classic tops have been popular for centuries, the modern t-shirt is actually a relatively new invention. The one-piece underclothes often worn by men in the 19th century were awkward for manual workers to wear and evolved instead into a top and a bottom buttoned together to make them easier to take off. These were, in turn, replaced with a convenient stretchy cotton undershirt that didn't need to be sewn together and was 'one size fits all', which quickly became the standard outfit for men doing hot and sweaty work.

This undershirt was already known as a 't-shirt' by the 1920s and spread beyond working men when men of all classes were issued them in the US army during the Second World War when not in uniform. After the war, the t-shirt became the symbol of post-war prosperity and ease as even film and TV stars wore them in famous roles, while the ease with which they could be dyed, printed on and modified made them popular classic women’s clothing items as they are an easy way of expressing individuality.
